For what it's worth, I've been playing around with this lately. I turn the mixture screw out until I stop the backfire (Jardine and Sportster mufflers) then increase the idle to stop stalling. Wish I could set the idle slower without stalling on deceleration, but I can't seem to get it as slow as I want. I'll live with the slightly fast idle because the stalling is not safe.
